In short: yes, Digitalbonus Bayern still exists in 2026. According to the Free State of Bavaria, the programme runs through 31 December 2027, but only for small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. The grant ranges from 7,500 euros (Digitalbonus Standard) to 30,000 euros (Digitalbonus Plus, which covers AI projects among other things), each up to 50 percent of eligible costs. Companies that fall into the medium-sized bracket, or that need pure consulting rather than an IT project, are better served by the nationwide BAFA consulting grant (50 percent in Bavaria, up to 1,750 euros) and by the free Mittelstand-Digital centres in Augsburg and Franken, both of which also serve Munich.

What funding exists for AI projects in Bavaria in 2026?

Many companies search specifically for "Digitalbonus Bayern" or "AI funding Bavaria" because the conditions have changed several times in recent years, and because, as our article on Digitalbonus Niedersachsen shows, a state programme can simply expire. Digitalbonus.Bayern is not one of those cases: it was relaunched in 2024 and, according to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, continues to run through 31 December 2027, with a fresh application quota released every month.

Only small businesses in the commercial sector with an establishment in Bavaria qualify for the Digitalbonus, as the programme's own conditions specify. The application runs online through an ELSTER business account and goes to the responsible district government: for Munich and Upper Bavaria, that is the Regierung von Oberbayern, based on Maximilianstraße in Munich itself. A medium-sized company with 50 to 249 employees falls outside this threshold and should instead go straight for the nationwide BAFA consulting grant for SMEs, which uses the standard SME definition and therefore includes medium-sized companies as well. For pure consulting work on an AI project, the BAFA grant is usually the more realistic first lever, while the Digitalbonus mainly subsidises the technical implementation that follows.

Where can SMEs in Munich get a free first assessment of AI?

Before a funding application is even worth filing, it pays to get a vendor-neutral read on the project itself, and in Bavaria that does not require booking time with an agency.

• The Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Augsburg offers free qualification, hands-on pilot projects and information events on AI for the whole of Bavaria, with its own local partners in Augsburg, Munich (fortiss GmbH and the Technical University of Munich), Nuremberg and Regensburg.
• The Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Franken, based in northern Bavaria, covers similar ground, currently running formats such as an AI barcamp for SMEs, also free of charge because the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs funds its use.
• The IHK für München und Oberbayern (the Munich and Upper Bavaria Chamber of Commerce) bundles its own AI guide, the KI-Manager training programme and the annual "AI for SMEs" conference, run jointly with appliedAI and fortiss.
• Bayern Innovativ, the innovation agency mandated by the Free State, organises its own AI formats for small and medium-sized companies, such as the online workshop "AI meets SMEs" on AI in production.
• The non-profit appliedAI Institute for Europe, part of UnternehmerTUM at the Technical University of Munich, offers free entry-level courses such as "Foundations of AI: For Business" through its learning platform.

According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy's official funding notice of 15 December 2025, funding for the existing Mittelstand-Digital network is phased out step by step by the end of December 2026; a new network is set to build on the current AI results from 2027 onward while placing stronger emphasis on IT and cybersecurity, which is a good reason to book a slot at these centres early rather than waiting until the turn of the year.

How large is the Munich SME economy, really?

The strong demand for AI consulting in Munich also comes down to the sheer density of companies in the region, not just the hype around the topic.

• As of 31 December 2023, the IHK für München und Oberbayern counted 136,667 registered companies in the city of Munich alone, of which 66,754 were entered in the commercial register; across all of Upper Bavaria the figure was 407,277.
• As of 30 June 2023, the same IHK structural data put Munich's employees subject to social security contributions at 960,354, of which 414,304, or roughly 43 percent, worked in business services, precisely the segment where AI use cases are discussed most.
• Across Bavaria, the SME sector counts just over 600,000 companies and around four million jobs subject to social security contributions, according to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, which by its own account makes the Free State Germany's leading SME state.
